Tech help - got an free android phone the other day to use w/bluetooth

speaker. It's not connected to any phone plan, I took it because it connected to WiFi and would connect to my speaker. For some reason I can't get it to do either. I log onto the WiFi network and it appears connected but if I try to go to a webpage or download any apps it says there's no connectivity. Am I missing something? From what I've been told I don't need to have a phone plan in order for a phone to connect to WiFi but I'm also not very smart when it comes to things like technology, or women. Any help is appreciated (with the phone thing, the women stuff is a lost cause).
